Challenge

Finding a recipe that caters to all tastes can be challenging. Extensive searches through cookbooks or culinary apps often fail to provide new options, resulting in the same meals being prepared repeatedly.

Solution

A mobile cooking app that connects users with similar diets, enhanced with tools like a Weekly Planner and Shopping List for better organization and planning.

Analysis

We analyzed the app using methods like Screen Flow, the Kano Model, Feature Priorities, and Design Filters. We also conducted a competitive analysis with similar apps to identify strengths and weaknesses, uncovering potential areas for redesign.

Strengths

  • Numerous recipes

  • Anyone can upload recipes

  • Community integration

  • Comments

  • Video tips

  • Free and accessible to everyone

  • Inclusive with affordable/expensive & easy/difficult recipes

Weaknesses

  • Poor information architecture for recipe presentation

  • Search is on a separate page

  • Lack of user personalization

  • No proper user profile

  • Can't filter by time/calories, etc.

  • Limited focus on diets & nutrients

  • Visually bland, fewer images

  • Inconsistent design

Opportunities

  • Add a shopping list feature

  • Customize diet preferences (vegetarian/vegan, etc.) even after initial setup

  • Implement a weekly planner

  • Improve filter organization

  • Highlight nutritional information

  • Add filters for time, difficulty, and nutrients

  • Ensure consistent design

  • Enable recipe uploads within the app

  • Structure recipes in steps and include ingredients during each step

  • Enhance community features (profiles, likes, follows, etc.)

  • Place the search bar on the home screen

Design Studio

We used the "Crazy 8s" method to quickly sketch 8 ideas in 8 minutes. Our sketches revealed a shared vision, particularly for a new community section in the app's navigation bar.

In the Deep Dive, we focused on the process of finding a "match" within the community, conceptualizing features like a percentage match display and finding personalized recipes.

This led to a shared storyboard illustrating the app's use case: a user, frustrated by not finding suitable recipes online, opens the Chefkoch app and discovers personalized suggestions from other users in the community.
